Some director's thoughts on the characters of Lear, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia.
Lear is a man of massive emotions, uncontrollable passions, dictatorial, uncompromising, magnificently charismatic, a brilliant politician, an iron-fisted leader, totally opinionated, egotistical, dogmatic, and overbearing. He inspires in some enormous love, devotion, respect and loyalty; in others, loathing and contempt.
Goneril is utterly ruthless, totally compulsive, paranoid, devious, vitriolic. She is never at peace, never satisfied,
trusts no one. She will destroy or murder anyone who stands in her way. She must have total control over everyone she deals with. In the course of the film she murders her sister, attempts to murder her husband and attempts to bring about the demise of her father.
Regan is coldblooded, completely ruthless, cynical and slyly devious. After Cornwall rips out Gloucester's eye sje cheers him on to rip out the other.
Cordelia is quixotic, uncompromising, pig-headed, fiercely loyal, fearless, determined and resolute. She is incapable of catering to anyone or in any way betraying what she believes in.
