Frequently I
see posed the question: “Is Shakespeare important and relevant to our modern
world?” followed by its concomitant: “If so, why?”
He has a better
understanding of the human psyche than any other writer has ever had.
He grapples
with the most monumental, complex, and important themes imaginable.
He
constantly challenges our beliefs, assumptions and prejudices.
He created
characters who are more profoundly complex, colorful, insistently
individualistic, irredeemably villainous, more heart-wrenchingly tragic,
stunningly heroic, and more psychologically developed and immediately
identifiable than has any other writer.
He blended passion,
empathy, outrage, humanity and intelligence in a way that has never been
equaled.
He laid bare
the essence of his most remarkable characters -- evil or heroic-- through the
most magnificent fusion of profound poetry, prose and blank verse ever penned.
